Skincare 101

Your skin is more than just the first thing people see – it’s also your body’s defense against germs and the environment and a reflection of you.

Treating your skin right should be part of your daily routine. Keeping it healthy and looking great gives you more confidence and allows the true you to shine through.

Steps to Look Your Best

  1. Wash – Use a gentle cleanser morning and evening. Washing too frequently or with a harsh cleanser can over-dry or irritate your skin, possibly making your acne worse.
  2. Dry – Gently pat skin dry with a soft cloth. Don’t scrub your skin dry or you could add irritation.
  3. Moisturize – Use a non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) moisturizer while your skin is still a little damp.
  4. Protect – Use sunscreen every day, year-round, to combat the damaging effects of the sun. Multi-task your moisturizer: Look for formulas that include sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection.
  5. Hands Off – Never squeeze or pick at your pimples, since that will only contribute to infection, inflammation and scarring.

Get to the Root of the Problem – If you’ve tried over-the-counter acne treatments and haven’t experienced a noticeable improvement, make an appointment to see your doctor. A doctor can prescribe effective treatments to combat the blemishes you have now and prevent future blemishes from forming.

Pick Products Wisely

Choose makeup, moisturizers and sunscreens labeled “non-comedogenic.” They are specially formulated not to irritate skin or clog pores.

Diet

What you eat won’t cause acne (even chocolate and French fries), but a balanced diet is beneficial for your overall health.

Stress

Stress doesn’t directly cause acne, but it can cause fluctuations in your hormones, which can cause skin to produce more oil, which can lead to clogged pores and blemishes. Try to minimize stress and take time for yourself. Get enough sleep, and try exercise and relaxation techniques.

Yourself
